BSU Computer Science Club Takes Home Third Place

Bemidji State University students took home 3rd place in a computing competition last month.

The BSU Computer Science Club members competed at the Collegiate Computing Competition held October 21st, in Thief River Falls, according to a release. All 23 teams from across Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, had a chance of participating in two programming sessions and a word problem session.

The senior team called “The Fuzzy Bunnies,” consisted of Grant Yetter of Frisco, TX; Yohannes Seifu of Bemidji, MN; Josh Urmann of East Bethel, MN; and Aaron Carter of Bemidji, MN. The Fuzzy Bunnies took home 3rd place and a $1,000 prize, which will go towards future activities for the club, according to the release.

The junior team called “The Mighty Perceptrons,” consisted of Zach Hewitt of Bemidji, MN; ThankGod Ofurum of Windhoek, Namibia; Mike Farber of Bemidji, MN; and Richard Case of Breezy Point, MN. The Mighty Perceptrons took home 5th place.

This is the seventh time the university has had a top-three finish in the DigiKey competition since 2000, according to the release.

“Following several weeks of preparation before the event, practicing efficient solutions to computational story problems during Computer Science Club meetings, our team members enjoyed a stiff competition all day at DigiKey, where several teams remained in contention for the top prize throughout,” said assistant professor of computer science Francois Neville in the release.

The event was sponsored by DigiKey.
