BSU Beavers vs Minnesota Golden Gophers Mens Hockey
BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) — Sam Warning posted two goals and an assist to lead the No. 3/5 University of Minnesota to a 5-1 victory an post a nonconference series sweep over the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team.
Jeff Jubinville (F, Sr., Edmonton, Alberta) gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead just 2:37 into the first period. Markus Gerbrandt (F, So., Edmonton, Alberta) fed the senior on the far post for a tap in for his first goal of the season. Danny Mattson (F. Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) was also credited with an assists on the play.
The Golden Gophers would answer to tie the score before the period would come to an end. With 2:55 on the clock, Warning took a slap shot form the left faceoff circle that deflected off ofa BSU defender’s stick and fluttered over the shoulder of goaltender Andrew Walsh (Jr., Dawson Creek, British Columbia).
Tied 1-1 at the end of the frame, Minnesota held a slight edge in shots on goal, 10-7.
Midway through the second period BSU saw Minnesota take its first lead on another tough bounce.
Minnesota’s Justin Kloos took a shot from the top of the slot. Walsh made the initial stick save to the back wall, but the puck careened to the stick of Taylor Cammarata in front of the net for the tap in goal.
Warning collected his second goal of the game at the 13:38 mark of the period to put UM up 3-1.
BSU would not recover.
Opening the third period with a two-goal lead, Minnesota would get goals from Mike Riley and Kloos to close out the game, 5-1.
Special teams play was a non-factor in the game. BSU penalty-kill unit held Minnesota scoreless on all five of its power-play opportunities, while the Beavers’ power-play went 0-for-4.
Walsh turned aside 26 shots and allowed five goals on the night. His record dips to 0-3-1 after the loss.
The Beavers, now 0-3-1, hit the road Oct. 25-26 to open Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. BSU travels to Huntsville, Ala. to face WCHA newcomer and long-time rival University of Alabama-Huntsville in a 7:07 p.m. opener Friday. The teams wrap up the series from Von Braun Center at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
