Brainerd’s Park Ice Rink Opens

Although winter break is almost over for most, the winter activities are just beginning. Kids and families got to skate around Gregory Park today as the Brainerd skating rinks and warming houses opened for the first time. It was about time the local parks opened up their skating rink, at least that’s what ice skating instructor Mike Padgett believed. And kids were feeling the same way too, a little restless, and wanting to enjoy outdoor activities while still on their holiday break.

The rink here at Gregory Park is completely man-made but it’s taken two weeks extra for the ice to freeze over because temps haven’t been cooperating. The newly renovated warming house and about 40 pairs of donated skates have sat on the shelf since December 19th when the park was originally set to open. With the ice finally frozen, visitors can now enjoy a completely free ice skating experience.
