Brainerd Tackles Cancer
Season after season, the Brainerd football team tackles countless opponents.
The Warriors face their toughest challenge yet, as they lead the charge to tackle cancer.
Brainerd senior runningback Paul Augustinack receives plenty of hits on the field, but none of them hurt as much as the cancer that claimed his grandmother, and more recently, his father.
The “tackle cancer” campaign aims to increase awareness for the disease by encouraging students to sign a banner with names of loved ones who currently fight cancer, or have lost their lives to it. The banner fills up quickly.
In addition to raising awareness for the disease, the football team works to raise money cancer research.
The team raised only $500 the past two seasons, but this year, Brainerd ramps it up a gear with Tackle Cancer wristband sales and several other fundraisers.
Even before the game, the team has already raised about $1,500.
Cancer plays dirty, but if enough people come together, maybe it can be defeated.
