Brainerd Public Library to Hold Four Writer’s Workshops Beginning April 7

The Brainerd Public Library will be presenting four writers workshops throughout the month of April. The series will be kicked off on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 5:30p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with “Peeling away the Layers to Discover the Truth of your Character” with author Candace Simar.

This workshop will discuss how a reader can identify with fictional characters and why readers sometimes do not love characters as much as the writer does. This class will help you learn ways to make your characters live and breathe on the page. No matter where the participant is on their writing journey, their writing can improve by creating more dynamic characters.   The class will be informal and will include both instruction and sharing.

Presenter Candace Simar has written “Abercrombie Trail” (2009), “Pomme de Terre” (2010), “Birdie” (2011), “Blooming Prairie” (2012), and “Shelterbelts” (2015).   In 2013 she co-authored “Farm Girls” with Angela Foster. “Birdie” received the 2012 Spur Award and “Blooming Prairie” was a 2013 Spur finalist. Candace lives in Pequot Lakes.

The additional writer’s workshops will be:

• “Skype Presentation on Query Letters” with Laura Zats on Monday, April 11 from 6:00-7:00p.m. (limited to 25)
• “Somewhere Between Poem and Prose and Something Else Entirely” for middle and high school writers with Sonya Chamberlain on Thursday, April 21 from 3:30-5:30p.m.
• “How to Attract Readers (or Publishers) with an Engaging First Page” with Angela Foster on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 9:00-11:00a.m.
