Brainerd Ice Fishing Extravaganza Postponed

Anglers will have to wait another two weeks for an ice fishing contest held in Brainerd. The Annual Jaycee’s Ice Fishing Extravaganza has been postponed to Febuarary sixth due to inconsistent ice thickness found throughout the Brainerd lakes area.

The conclusion to postpone the Jaycee’s Ice Fishing Extravaganza, was not exactly the news the Brainerd Jaycee’s wanted to hear.

The decision made by the Brainerd Jaycees contest officials and the Crow Wing County Sherriff’s Office, came after testing the Ice both Wednesday and Thursday this week on North Long Lake and Gull Lake in Brainerd.

Even with the latest cold-snap in the weather, the Sherriff’s office was surprised to find that drilling each whole only about twenty feet away, they would find a different depth of ice.

The Brainerd Jaycees has dealt with some unhappy customers, but they are still expecting over 85 percent of their original guests to still attend with a later date.

The event has only been postponed two other times also due to to ice conditions back in 2002 and 2012. In three weeks time, the Brainerd Jaycees plans to continue preparing just as normal for the big event.
