Brainerd Girls Lacrosse Worried About Defense In 2019

The sport of lacrosse is growing like wildfire in Brainerd. The Brainerd girls lacrosse team made the jump from being a club team to becoming a varsity sport last year, and now nearly 90 girls have turned out for the team this year.

In their first year as a varsity sport, the Warriors did not win a game, but they said they learned a lot from that first season. Brainerd only graduated one senior last season, but their biggest concern this year is their goaltending. The Warriors started with hockey goalie, Olivia King, in net, but she had never played lacrosse before. If Brainerd can figure out their defense in time, they are confident they can get their first win as a varsity sport.

“We definitely need to improve on defense,” Alyssa Copham, a Brainerd senior midfielder, said. “I think our defense kind of falls apart in some games, and we just need to communicate better. We need to find somebody who’s really comfortable in goal because we’ve been back and forth with goalies.”

“I think we are all very happy we took the leap to school [varsity],” Jaycie Hinrichs, a Brainerd senior midfielder, said. “It’s really improved our program, we’ve brought in a lot of new players.”

The Warriors will look to capture their first win in program history tomorrow, April 27th, when they take on Hermantown/Proctor at 1:30 p.m. on the Brainerd High School turf.
