Brainerd Girls Golf Remains Positive Amid Late-Season Start

The Brainerd girls golf team is anxiously awaiting the snow to melt. Despite being a third of the way through April, they have been unable to practice or play outdoors. Their first two matches were postponed and a third, the Crosswoods Invitational on April 19th, is in jeopardy as well. The girls’ spirits remain high, though, as they have found creative ways to get better until they can finally hit the links.

In the gym at Riverside Elementary in Brainerd, head coach Todd Person instructed the girls to break into groups of three, raid the auxiliary closet, and grab whatever fun items they could find. They would take these items and craft a hole, give it a par number, and then demonstrate it to the rest of the team. Every group got their chance to play. Low score was the winner.

It’s not ideal, but it was making the best of a bad situation. Like in golf, sometimes life doesn’t go the way you want. It can’t be frustrating, and it requires patience, but you have to play it as it lies. Luckily, if you have a bad hole, you can tee it up on the next one and try again. The girls have taken that to heart and are hoping it propels them further then they’ve gone in the past few years.

“Last year and the year before we had a lead after the first day of sections and we were unable to hold onto that,” said Coach Person.

Senior Captain Izzy Olson believes that work will pay off and that she plans on uplifting everyone and remains positive. And her fellow team captain Camdyn Marohn agreed with the sentiment.

“Having fun is really my main thing, I just want everyone to enjoy the season,” said Marohn.
