Brainerd Fire Department Could See Big Changes

The Brainerd Fire Department announced the hiring of a new fire chief this week, but that’s not the only change that could be coming their way. On June 1st, Crow Wing Township notified the City of Brainerd they will be ending their fire service agreement with the city, resulting in a loss of about $50,000 to the department’s revenue.

In 2014 Brainerd’s Fire Department lost two other contracts. All three combined totaled more than $120,000 in revenue for the department; and losing that much money could signal big changes ahead.

However the contract with Crow Wing Township requires a one-year notice before termination, meaning the city could try to persuade them to stay. And although nothing is official yet, the city council has approved a motion to notify the Firefighters Union their plans to possibly restructure.

The city of Little Falls is offering their fire services to Crow Wing Township for closer to $15,000, despite being 25 miles away.
