Brainerd Fire Department Could See Big Changes

The Brainerd Fire Department announced the hiring of a new fire chief this week, but that’s not the only change that could be coming their way. On June 1^st, Crow Wing Township notified the City of Brainerd they will be ending their fire service agreement with the city, resulting in a loss of about $50,000 to the department’s revenue.

In 2014 Brainerd’s Fire Department lost two other contracts. All three combined totaled more than $120,000 in revenue for the department; and losing that much money could signal big changes ahead.

However the contract with Crow Wing Township requires a one-year notice before termination, meaning the city could try to persuade them to stay. And although nothing is official yet, the city council has approved a motion to notify the Firefighters Union their plans to possibly restructure.

The city of Little Falls is offering their fire services to Crow Wing Township for closer to $15,000, despite being 25 miles away.
