For the last few months the Brainerd City council has been working on a proposal to convert the fire department from a full time department to a pay on call department. And eliminate five fire equipment operators and instead create and hire new positions called a fire marshal and deputy chief. On Monday the City council voted unanimously to adopt the resolution for the restructuring.

City Council admitted that the decision was very tough. However, according to the council the motivation behind the restructuring was to improve the department and make it more practical. They are confident that the restructuring will enhance the fire department, lower response times, and also allow the residents and the department to save money.

The money saved will go toward new vehicles and other new equipment needs for the station

Although the vote was unanimous there are still some not satisfied with the councils decision.

Although the fire department and the city council currently may not agree about this decision they do agree that transparency and the safety of the community are their utmost concern.
