Brainerd Baseball Welcomes In A New Coach After 46 Years

Since 1947, there have been only two people that have held the title of Brainerd baseball head coach. This year, the Warriors will welcome in their third head coach in over 70 years after Lowell Scearcy decided to step down after last season.

“This is something that I think a lot of people would relish,” Trent Grams, Brainerd Baseball Head Coach, said. “The fact that I’m able to be a part of this is awesome.”

Grams, the newest baseball coach for Brainerd High School, previously coached the 8^th grade team at Little Falls and is fully aware that he’s replacing Lowell Scearcy, who held the position at Brainerd for 46 years and racked up over 750 wins.

“Taking over for somebody that’s done what they’ve done here, that’s always going to be a little nerve wracking, but you have to drown that part out,” Grams said. “Once you’re named the head coach, then you have to start doing your own thing.”

Sometimes change can be good…

“He’s brought good energy so far,” Eric Martin, Brainerd Senior Pitcher, said. “It’s a big change, Lowell was here for a lot of years, and it’s just been good, and we are pretty excited for this year.”

“He’s been awesome, he’s been easy to talk to,” Josh Hukriede, Brainerd Senior Catcher, said. “He’s a great guy; he doesn’t care where you’ve been before, he just wants to know how good of a ball player you are and if you fit right for the team.”

The Brainerd Warriors may have a new coach in 2019, but their goals remain the same.

“The goal is to go to state this year,” Martin said. “That should be the goal of every team, just be the best that you can be and win as many games as possible.”

The Warriors were just one win away from a section title last year, and although most of that team graduated, the Warriors expect to be a threat once again.

“This is a program that has always competed in the past, every game they play they expect to win, so we expect to do the same,” Grams said. “The talent, I think, is here, we just have to put it all together.”

The Warriors open their season next Tuesday, April 9^th, when they travel to St. Cloud Tech to take on the Tigers.
