Blackduck’s Police Chief Fired, Residents React

Blackduck’s city council has voted to fire its chief of police John Wilkinson, leaving the city with no police force. This is causing a concern among some residents.

City documents show Wilkinson has violated several city and state laws. The investigation, led by the Grand Rapids Police Department, reports Wilkinson gave an 18-year-old girl alcoholic drinks at a party last year. He admitted both him and the girl drove to Red Lake to buy illegal fireworks. The report also says he made loud obscene comments about having sex with an 18-year-old, while he was intoxicated.

Blackjack city officials did not comment due to on-going legal processes. We could not reach Wilkinson for comment.

Some residents are in disbelief. Some say Wilkinson has been a strong support to the community.

Just two months ago, the second officer of the two-team force left the department.

City officials say they are working with Beltrami County for law enforcement in the community.

Wilkinson has been placed on paid administrative leave since June 6. He has the rights to request a hearing within 60 days.
