Bemidji State Quarterback Battle

Every play in football begins with the quarterback.  The Beavers will not rush to make a decision on who will fill role, and may not name a starter until the fall.

The leading candidates are Jordan Hein and Ryan Shields. The sophomore Shields received more playing time than freshman Hein in 2014. Shields led the team with nearly 1,900 yards passing.

Last season, Hein threw for nearly 1,000 yards and gained 361 yards on the ground to lead all Beavers rushers. Both quarterbacks struggled hitting their receivers last fall. Shields completed 48.6% of his passes and Hein completed 47.9%.  Each of the slingers threw only one more touchdown than they did interceptions.

Head coach Jeff Tesch says the most consistent passer will win the job.  He prefers one definite starter over a two-quarterback system.

Two freshmen quarterback signees will also add to the mix in the fall. Wisconsin athletes Nick Mehlum of Superior and Jared Henning of Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School will join the quarterback corps.
