Bemidji Girls’ Hockey’s Unbeaten Streak Ends After Loss to Holy Family

Nick Saban once said, “It doesn’t matter what you’re ranked until the end,” and that’s true, especially in the early goings when no one’s really provided themselves yet.

But it feels like Bemidji girls’ hockey has proved themselves worthy—at least for now—of their #6 ranking after starting the season 7-0, with four of those wins coming against ranked opponents. And although nobody is going to be crowned tonight, it’s always fun to see how a couple of top-six unbeatens stack up.

On Friday, the Lumberjacks were at home facing off with Class AA’s top ranked Holy Family. The Fire sit atop the polls in Class AA for the first time in their eight-year existence, and they looked it out the gates, getting a 2-0 lead just two-and-a-half minutes into the game.

Millie Knott put the Jacks on the board, but they trailed 3-1 after one period. After no one scored in the second, Naomi Johnson picked up the loose puck in the third to bring Bemidji within one goal. However, the Lumberjacks couldn’t find another, and a late empty netter solidified a 4-2 win for Holy Family.

Shots on goal were pretty even, 28-23 in favor of the Fire. It was a tough loss but a good litmus test for the Jacks.
