Baxter Standoff Ends Peacefully After Man Locks Himself In Car With Gun

Yesterday, it was reported that several roads were closed and there was a heavy police presence in Baxter near Cypress Drive and Clearwater Road.

According to the Baxter Police Department, a man had barricaded himself in his vehicle with a gun around 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. The individual contacted police dispatch and told them he was parked at the end of Cypress Drive in Baxter. Members of the Baxter Police Department and the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office talked with the individual for six hours and were successfully able to get him the help that he needed.

“The law enforcement presence on scene was more just to secure the area and behind-the-scenes work is what really helped us. Locally, we have our Crisis Negotiation Team. Members of that team were on the phone with him the entire time,” said Baxter Police Chief Jim Exsted. “They did their job and they did it very well yesterday.”
