Baxter Cub Foods to Close as Part of Grocery Store Purchase Agreement

More than 200 employees will be laid off following the sale of a grocery store chain in the Brainerd Lakes Area, and one store will closed.

According to a press release from owner Chris Quisberg, S&R Quisberg Inc. has reached an agreement to sell three grocery stores to Miner’s Inc.: Cub Foods in Brainerd and Baxter, and Supervalu in Pequot Lakes. The family owned retail grocery company had owned those stores for over 39 years.

Miner’s will consolidate and rebrand the stores as Super One Foods, and the Cub Foods in Baxter will close in September.

According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), about 235 employees will be laid off following the sale beginning on September 25th. The press release from Chris Quisberg says their workforce will be offered interviews for employment with Super One Foods. Quisberg says selling the stores was a difficult decision, but they decided it was the right time to retire from the grocery business.

Miner’s is a fourth-generation family owned grocery retailer and has operated in the Brainerd Lakes Area for over 40 years. President and CEO Patrick Miner said in a statement that acquiring the stores demonstrates the commitment of Miner’s to the local community, and that it’s an opportunity to strengthen and grow their presence in northern Minnesota.
