Alabama-Huntsville at Bemidji State Highlights 03/01/2014
BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – In quite possibly his final game at Sanford Center, senior Jeff Jubinville (F, Edmonton, Alberta) scored twice and added an assist to lead the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team to a 4-1 victory and a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series split with University of Alabama-Huntsville Saturday.
Defender Graeme McCormack (So., Thunder Bay, Ontario) chipped in a goal and an assist on the night as nine BSU players found their way to the scoring column.
The Beavers posted a season-high 48 shots on goal and goaltender Jesse Wilkins (Fr., Calgary, Alberta) turned aside 22-of-23 Charger attempts to earn his third win of the season (3-5-3).
Jubinville got the Beavers on the board to open the senior night festivities. Fellow senior Radoslav, Illo (F, Bystrica, Slovakia) started the play by finding McCormack a shot from the point. Jubinville redirected the puck past the UAH goaltender Carmine Guerrero at the 14:51 mark of the first for the Beavers’ first power-play goal in five games and 20 man advantage opportunities.
Twenty-two seconds later, the Chargers would return the favor to again knot the score, this time at 1-1. Chad Brears fired an odd-angle shot of the back of a BSU player and the puck found its way inside the left pipe.
Bemidji State would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission thanks to a nifty goal by Cory Ward (So., F, Las Vegas, Nev.). Markus Gerbrandt (So., F, Edmonton, Alberta) and Sam Windle (Jr., D, Maple Grove, Minn.) were credited with assists on the play.
Jubinville netted his second goal of the game on a tap in from the left post, set up by John Parker (So., F, Green Brook, N.J.) and Matt Prapavessis (Jr., D, Oakville, Ontario), at the 10:02 mark of the second period. Parker’s assist marked the second point in as many nights for the newcomer, playing in just his fifth game as a Beaver.
With 64 seconds left in the second stanza, the Beavers would stretch their lead to three goals, 4-1, on a tally from the point off the stick of McCormack. Jubinville would establish a new single-game career-high with three points, as the forward, along with Phil Marinaccio (Fr., F, Nobleton, Ontario), assisted on the play.
Holding a 4-1 with 20 minutes to play, Wilkins buttoned up the win turning aside all 11 third period UAH shots.
The Beavers, now 9-17-7 overall and 9-12-4 in WCHA play travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to battle the Bowling Green State University Falcons in final series of the conference season. The two-game set will get underway from BGSU Ice Arena at 6:07 p.m. Friday, with the season finale set for a 6:07 p.m. opening face off.
