Laporte School Implements New STEM Program

The Laporte School will be implementing a new STEM program this year. The school was awarded a $10,000 grant from Monsanto Tuesday.

In order to be eligible, a rural farmer had to nominate the school for the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant.

Principal Kim Goodwin drafted the proposal to purchase six carts with a 3-D printer, building blocks, circuitry projects and more to use in the classrooms.

“This is going to give us an opportunity to bring in all these materials into the classroom so the teachers can actually make things come alive,” Goodwin said.

According to her, staff had wanted to implement the project for over a year, but didn’t have the resources to do so.

“I think some of these complex tasks we make in to ‘work’ for the kids and this is a way we can get at those skills but in a fun way. So I’m really excited about that,” AJ Dombeck, a preschool teacher said.
