20 for 20: Bob Peters (2001)

To celebrate our 20th anniversary of Lakeland News, we’re taking a look back at some of the memorable local stories we’ve covered over the years. We’re calling it 20 For 20 – twenty stories in all, one for each of the 20 years we’ve been on the air with Lakeland News.

For our fourth installment, we look back at the year 2001. It was when the career of legendary hockey coach Bob Peters would come to an end. Peters started at Bemidji State in 1966, and he would go on to rack up 702 wins at BSU and earn 13 national championships. He decided to retire following the 2000-2001 season, and our intern reporter Carrie Cameron was on hand to report on his final game.

Peters wasn’t finished with hockey after retiring as the Beavers’ head coach, as he went on to serve as commissioner of the College Hockey America Conference. Peters celebrated his 80th birthday last year and lives in Bemidji with his wife Mary Lou.
