Tweed Museum of Art Hosts Shakespear’s First Folio! All Month Long

The big buzz around campus is all about the Shakespeare’s First Folio! The Tweed Museum of Art and the University of Minnesota Duluth are proud to host the original First Folio of Shakespeare, during the month of October (4-26), as part of a national touring exhibition celebrating 400 years of the bard. We are the ONLY site in the state of Minnesota to host it! Although this is the main attraction, we are also offering a range of must-see exhibitions in the other galleries, some to supplement the Folio exhibition. View the full schedule on the link.

Teresa’s Twisted Metal Party from 4 P-M to 7 P-M

Via Facebook: We are a small family run business from Grand Rapids, Minnesota and we specialize in making durable yet beautiful garden art for your flower beds and lawns. Each piece we create — signs, pot stands, fire rings, flowers, cup holders, trellises, arbors, etc. — are handcrafted and can be customized to your liking. This fun party will be held on Friday, September 30th from 5-7pm at Teresa’s home in Gonvick. The show is opening today (Tuesday, September 20th) and will run through Wednesday, October 5th for those who cannot attend but would like to make a purchase. Feel free to ask me questions as you look through our products; we want you to get exactly what you would like for your lawn and flower gardens.

Color Run from 5 P-M to 7 P-M

Via Facebook: This color walk/run features a designated 3.1 mile course. During the race, participants are doused with color at various color stations ending with one final color celebration at the finish line. We are still acepting registrations, however promotional items may not be guaranteed with registrations recieved after September 16th. Register at the link below or contact Mrs. Tisdell or Missy Bahr for more information. Check in starts at 5PM with the race starting at 6PM. Cost is $30 per participant with a $100 max per family. All proceeds from this event will fund the 5th grade field trip and 5th grade graduation ceremony. This event will be ongoing each year and put on by the 5th grade teachers and parents. We look forward to this becoming a great new tradion at Northern!

Force of Will Organized Play/ Friday Night Magic from 6 P-M to 9:30 P-M

Via Facebook: Entry: $5. Join fellow Force of Will players every Friday evening for some exciting and fun play set in welcoming and beginner-friendly format. Format: New Frontiers (Alice Cluster, Lapis Cluster) Note: Players will provide their own constructed decks for this event. Players must use the same deck for the whole event. Rounds: Swiss. Held at Accidentally Cool Games in Bemidji. At 6:30, Friday Night Majic. Special Prizes: All players will receive a RELEASE DAY foil promo card just for playing in one of tonight’s events! Kaladesh releases today! Join fellow Magic players for an evening of friendly and fun card slinging as we celebrate the release of this awesome setting and its new exciting cards! Friday Night Magic (or FNM) is a format of Magic: The Gathering tournaments, held on Friday nights in gaming stores and associations all across the world. They are designed to be a beginner-friendly introduction to organized play.

3rd Annual 5K Walk/Run for Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Awareness starting at 7:30 AM

Via Facebook: The 3rd Annual 5K Walk/Run for domestic violence & sexual assault awareness will be held this Saturday in Rice Lake. Registration will be start at 7:30 am at the Rice Lake Community Center.  T-shirts, beverage and food will be provided as well as a chance to win prizes (including children’s bikes) & placement trophies. Everyone welcome. Hope to see you there!!

9th Annual Walk to Remember starting at 9 A-M

For those who have lost a child in early pregnancy, stillbirth, newborn death or SIDS, Sanford Bemidji and PETAL (Parents Embracing Time After Loss) program members are hosting the 9th Annual Walk to Remember at 9 a.m. on Oct. 1 in Sanford Bemidji Medical Center’s east lobby. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m. A memorial service will follow the walk with a tree planting ceremony and reading of names. A silent auction will conclude at 11:30 a.m. Participants can create a poster or bring a photo for the memory wall to further remember the babies who have passed away. This event is free to the public. Pre-registration is recommended, but it not required. Itasca’s Presenters Under the Pines: John Salhus Art Display from 9 A-M to 6 P-M

Chicago artist John Salhus will bring pieces from his exhibit at the Nemeth Art Center in Park Rapids to show at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center. Salhus’ work depicts a struggle between the manmade and the natural, but it’s a repressed, artificial nature that seems to be overtaking the manmade. In many of his recent works, water is the natural element that seems to be “winning.”

Calling All Pokemon Trainers from 10 A-M to Noon

Via Facebook: Do you have a young Pokemon trainer that would like to play Pokemon with friends, classmates, and other players every week in a friendly, safe, positive environment. We’re here! ACG is excited to invite all Pokemon trainers as we launch a new weekly opportunity for you to play Pokemon: The Trading Card Game (TCG). We are specifically hoping to foster an opportunity for young players (Age 8+) to socialize, have fun, and play Pokemon with their friends. We will have theme ($12.99) and new-trainer ($9.99) decks available for purchase for players if they don’t have a deck of their own. Players are encouraged to bring their own cards to play with. Ground Cover Painting Workshop from 10 A-M to 2 P-M

Instructor: Dr. Charles Alberti who taught at the School of Art Institute of Chicago! He also earned his BFA in Painting, Art History, and Art Education from the same school. Charles has had art shows throughout the United States. His works are in private, corporate and museum collections! Fee: $55/each – includes Instruction and supplies needed for the project! Student Kaladesh League from noon to 8 P-M

$30 One-Time Entry. Calling ALL students in the Bemidji and surrounding area to join our Magic: The Gathering Kaladesh Student League, and get your first look at this awesome new Magic set full of innovation and masterpiece! Each player receives an initial 6 booster packs of Kaladesh from which they will build a sealed deck of at least 40 cards. Every week you’ll play a best-of-3 match with an opponent and report your result to the ACG staff. Players will be allowed to pair themselves with opponents of their choice, but each week you must play a different opponent in the league. Fall Colors Vista Hike Exploring the North Country Trail and the Mississippi River Watershed from 12:30 P-M to 3 P-M

Meet at the North Country Trail Head Parking at the South Entrance to Itasca State Park at 12:30 p.m. as we carpool to the trailhead. The route will follow the North Country Trail west, from the Anchor Matson trailhead and conclude at the overlook at Tim-Don-Dell hill. Route may change based on weather and trail conditions. Stand amongst majestic red pine as you look across a sea of hardwoods towards the Smokey Hills seen 18 miles to the south.  See the rolling glacial hills that help created the Mississippi watershed basin at its beginnings around Itasca State Park.  Portions of this 2.5 mile route will be a strenuous.

Harvest Moon Festival starting at 1:30 P-M

Takedown Gym’s Amazing Race starting at 2 P-M

Homecoming is on the way and the Warriors plan to “Cage the Cardinals” from Alexandria on Saturday, October 8 at 2pm on the stadium field at Brainerd High School. The week proceeding the big game will be filled with festivities for the whole community, the first of which is coming this Saturday, October 1: Takedown Gym’s Amazing Race. Gather a team of family or friends to take on this adventure that’s an insane obstacle course crossed with a wicked relay race! Teams of 4-6 people will race around the Brainerd High School complex — rain or shine — doing fantastical feats of strength, endurance, trivia and silliness. Be prepared for each teammate to run, sweat, swim, slip, slide or trot. All will have fun! The $10 per person fee to participate will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Backus Legion Hosts Fire/Rescue Fish Fry Benefit starting at 4:30 P-M

A fish fry benefit for the Backus Fire Dept. and First Responders will be held Sat., Oct. 1, at the Backus American Legion. The dinner, served from 4:30 p.m. until gone, includes deep fried or baked fish, augratin potatoes, coleslaw and a dinner roll for $9 a Plate. The event also includes a seven-round meat raffle with three packages awarded per round for a $1 ticket.

Itasca’s Presenters Under the Pines: Mark Seeley presents Our Changing Minnesota Climate: A Challenge to Managing Our Water Resources from 4:30 P-m to 5:30 P-M

Meet inside the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center. Hotter summers, heavier rain events, droughts, more storms! In recent years people have been recognizing changes in our weather and climate. In our own Great Lakes Region there are measurable changes going on including warmer temperatures, more days with tropical-like dew points, and an increase in fluctuating precipitation, including extreme rainfall events. There are links between these weather extremes and changes in the landscape. Join Mark Seeley, Extension Climatologist and Professor of Meteorology and Climatology as he shares with us the observations in weather changes. He will also show how climate models suggest continued changes in the direction shown by recent trends. Seeley notes, “It is important for us to acknowledge and gain better understanding of these changes so that we are able to adapt effectively in the management of our natural resources.”

Justin Moore in Concert starting at 7:30 P-M

Tigirlily will open for Justin Moore at the Sanford Center Arena in Bemidji. The “Kinda Don’t Care” tour is presented by Coyote 102.5. Doors will open at 6 PM. General reserved tickets are sold for $60, $42 and $29 a seat. Tickets can be purchased at the Bob Lowth Ford Pickup windows at the Sanford Center, any Ticketmaster location, by phone or online.

SUNDAY:

The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra Opens New Season “Legends & Lore” at 3 P-M

The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra opens its 78th season, Legends & Lore, with the concert “Planetary Legends” on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Dr. Beverly Everett conducts. The BSO is pleased to welcome 18-year-old piano virtuoso Gareth Cordery to the stage to perform Tchaikovsky’s beautiful and much loved Piano Concerto No. 1. Also on the program, Holst’s “Jupiter” and Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony. Tickets are available at the door, in advance at Lueken’s Foods North and South, or at brownpapertickets.com. Prices are $20 adults, $15 seniors 62+, and $10 college students with ID.  Students grades K–12 are admitted free. Doors open for seating at 2:30 pm.
