This was unlike any other board meeting. The Bemdiji School Board held a special session Wednesday to discuss the matter of indoor and outdoor recreation needs. The board members got active, literally standing up on their feet to exchange ideas.
The Bemidji School Board has spent a lot of time and effort to form a future master plan of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities. The board even hired Northern Minnesota Solutions to help gather data from various community groups.
In a special board meeting, the organization got board members involved in an activity to stimulate ideas and opinions about the school district’s strengths, challenges, values, and vision using Post-It notes. Board members were asked to write down their thoughts on the benefits of having more recreational facilities and what they need to be successful.
After all the Post-It notes were collected, members prioritized those ideas by placing red dot stickers. When it came to educational and recreational facility challenges, the majority believed pre-school and elementary school classroom spaces and money for maintenance were big concerns.
Northern Minnesota Solutions believes focusing on these aspects, along with proper communication and implementation, are the first steps to creating solutions for recreational facilities. This was just one of many meetings presented by Northern Minnesota Solutions. A similar type of meeting involving the community will be held on March 4th at 7 PM at the Bemidji High School Commons.
