Shingobee Connection Trail Project Complete

An over two million dollar project is finally complete. The Shingobee Connection Trail is officially open with the completion of the tunnel under Highway 371 in Walker. The Shingobee Connection Trail is almost 7 miles long, but it connects hundreds of miles of trails in Northern Minnesota. Walker Mayor Scott Bruns said, “We are the only city in Minnesota that has two major bike trails intersecting in the city of Walker.” The trail allows people to  ride to Brainerd, Cass Lake, Park Rapids, and more using the Heartland State Trail and Paul Bunyan State Trail.

The new tunnel now gives kids a safe 0.3 mile path from school to Walker City Park, and it also allows visitors to experience the beauty of Walker from the seat of their bikes. SCT Trail group member Curt Vining said, “It’s getting people out and being active. I can tell most people this is the cheapest health insurance we can have.”

Now that the trail is finally finished, the future possibilities are endless. Mayor Bruns says that the Walker economy is booming and tourism and shopping are at an all time high.
