Local Leaders To Commemorate National Park Service’s 100th Anniversary in Minnesota

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, U.S Congresswoman Betty McCollum, U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, Outdoor Afro Founder Rue Mapp and local officials will be commemorating the 100^th anniversary of the National Park Service on Friday August 26th. The group will go on a tour of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.

Secretary Jewell along with local youth from Outdoor Afro are planning to paddle the Mississippi River on voyageur canoes from Wilderness Inquiry. Outdoor Afro, is a nonprofit that celebrates African American connections and leadership in nature. The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area gives Twin Cities are residents an opportunity to explore nature in close proximity to the city. There is hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and more.

As part of her visit Secretary Jewell will also be engaging in a dialogue with NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station from the Science Museum of Minnesota. She plans to talk with them about their unique perspective of America’s national parks.
