Golden Apple: Red Lake School Visits D.C.

Red Lake Middle School students met a star in the nation’s capitol recently.

Blues singer Citizen Cope paid every expense for the visit, as a small number of kids rehearsed with the artist and attended his concert in the D.C. area.

It’s part of Turnaround Arts, a White House program which helps low-performing schools improve through fine arts. Four total schools take part in Minnesota.

Red Lake teachers say they’ve seen a drop in bullying, as well as improved relationships between educators and students in the classroom, since starting with Turnaround Arts two years ago.

Students were shown national results of Turnaround Arts performances at a special screening on the afternoon of May 25.
