Enbridge Energy Ends Sandpiper Pipeline Plans

Enbridge Energy Partners has ended its plans to build the Sandpiper Pipeland. The company announced the withdrawal of state papers for the $2.6B project amid controversy and outcry across Minnesota.

The pipeline would have run from North Dakota, through Minnesota, to a terminal in Superior, Wisconsin. The company said in a press release that plans will be deferred beyond its five year plan after a review showed crude oil production in North Dakota was not enough to meet capacity.

In August, the company announced plans to create a joint venture with Marathon Petroleum Corporation to acquire a 49% equity interest in the holding company that owns 75% of the Bakken Pipeline System, which includes the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Bakken Pipeline would transport crude oil from North Dakota to other areas as far away as the Gulf Coast.

Enbridge also has plans for a $7.5B ‘Line 3’ replacement plan. The company would replace current pipe systems with updated materials from Hardisty, Alberta, to Superior, Wisconsin. Enbridge has a terminal in Clearbrook, Minnesota.
