Bemidji Woman Accused of Assault With Beer Bottle Charged

A Bemidji woman, who was captured on video hitting another woman with a glass beer bottle, has been charged in court Tuesday.

Onawa Winona Dunn, 41, was charged with second-degree assault in Beltrami County Courthouse. Her bail was set at $25,000 with no conditions and $15,000 with conditions, including no contact with the alleged victim.

Court documents show Dunn had six prior assault charges, out of thirteen past convictions, according to a criminal complaint.

Dunn was arrested Saturday evening, July 9, after Bemidji Police Department officers responded to an assault report by the old Pamida building. Officers found the victim leaving Subway with a swollen left cheek, blood around her nose and bleeding from her lip.

Dunn was identified after a witness described her and the scene, stating Dunn used both her fists, hands, and a beer bottle to strike the victim, the complaint states.

The victim was taken to a hospital and told police she was heading home across the bridge when Dunn began assaulting her. She said she was on the ground when she got hit with the beer bottle. Officers were able to see a large amount of blood on the wooden bridge behind Pamida, as well as an empty alcohol bottle, the complaint states.

Officers were also able to retrieve a cell phone with video of the assault.

Dunn is scheduled to appear in court July 18. If convicted, she could face seven years in prison, a $14,000 fine, or both.
