Bemidji Man Charged with Criminal Vehicular Homicide

Bemidji – Christopher Glenn Smith, 30, was sentenced on a count of felony Criminal Vehicular Homicide.

The one vehicle crash occurred on Highway 65 near Goodland in Itasca County this past March.

According to the Office of the Itasca Attorney, “The vehicle driven by Smith drifted off the highway and into the ditch where it rolled multiple times. Mark Alan Wirtjes was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.”

Smith has been sentenced to 57 months in prison but with a stayed execution of sentence for ten years. Smith has also been placed on ten years supervised probation. According to the Itasca County office “The following conditions to his probation include: serve 12 months jail; $1085 fine; DNA sample; chemical dependency evaluation and follow recommendations; no use of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance; be subject to random testing; and, not to drive without a valid license or insurance.”
